CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST
First Friday, September 3rd 2010, 6pm.
Jeffrey Clancy is a disciplined maker who practices centuries-old traditional metalsmithing techniques of hollow forming and fabrication of non-ferrous metals. Clancy undermines the prescribed connotations of utilitarian objects by confronting craft and taking a critical look at the objects of the decorative arts, specifically those within the vernacular of the metalsmith. This work is informed by a rigorous investigation into the duties these objects perform on utilitarian and social platforms, both historically and as reformed through a contemporary perspective.
These interests have manifested themselves in Clancy’s latest body of work, “Whitewares,” wherein the signs and shapes of traditional decorative arts and hollow ware are realized in fragmented, flaccid white silicone rubber. This will be Jeffrey Clancy’s first solo show in Portland, Maine. Join us at Gallery 37-A on the cobbled Wharf Street in Portland, Maine for an opening reception on First Friday in August and for a discussion with the artist on First Friday in September.
